The courtyard was unnervingly quiet, despite the conspicuous presence of several emergency service vehicles. Flashing blue lights illuminated the clear night sky, reflecting harshly against the neat facades of the townhouses that lined either side of the cobbled street. 

Looking up, he saw his partner hastily crossing the courtyard towards him.

‘Doesn’t look good’, he said once she was within earshot.

‘Nope’, she agreed. ‘And it just got even worse’. 

He raised his eyebrows inquisitively.

‘I’ve just heard from the house-to-house guys’. His eyes met hers.


‘They’ve found a second body’.
